Nacogdoches has a Jr. Drill Team through the 4-H program called “The Nacogdoches Pony Express”.

They meet weekly to practice and learn better horsemanship skills.  They participate in several competitions each year.

The ages range from age six to sixteen.

Jr. Drill Team

There is an entry level group of youth that don’t compete, as they and their horses are in the learning process.  Most of their drill routines are done at a trot.  This gives both the youth and their horses the opportunity to learn the basic drill maneuvers correctly and with precision before moving to the competition group where most of the drill is ridden at a lope.

The competition team is an accomplished group of youth that have learned to work together as a team with the other team members and their horses.  They have developed horsemanship skills along the way which enables them to

execute difficult drill routines with precision.  They compete at 4-H District, State competition, and USEDA

competitions here in Texas.
